Introduction
The time has finally come: Cache is in CS2.
The iconic map was removed from the Active Duty map pool in March 2019. While a reworked version debuted in September that same year, it never made it back to the official match pool. However, the map remained playable in competitive matchmaking and was one of the most popular maps in CS:GO until the transition to CS2.
With this release of an updated version, fans are hoping to see the iconic map make a return to the Active Duty pool and, as a consequence, the pro scene.
How To Play Cache in CS2
Despite the hype, Cache isn’t officially in CS2 yet. It’s not part of the matchmaking map pool. At the time of writing, players who want to play Cache in CS2 must download it via the Workshop. Here’s how:
- Go to the Cache Workshop page
- Click the green ‘Subscribe’ button
- Wait for the download to finish and then launch your game
- Cache can now be found in the Workshop maps section of the game
Given the map’s popularity, it’s likely to join the Competitive map pool sooner rather than later. Until then, you can check it out with friends or on your own.
When Will Cache Be Available in Premier Mode?
Many players are waiting for Cache to be added to the Active Duty map pool—the map pool used for pro tournaments and Premier Mode. However, there’s some uncertainty surrounding this. Cache is, after all, a community-made map. It’s created and maintained by FMPONE, not Valve.
Historically, this hasn’t been a hurdle for Active Duty inclusion, but Valve’s stance may have shifted. According to reliable sources, Valve wants full control over the Active Duty map pool, which is why they purchased the rights to Anubis (another community-made map) before adding it to the map pool for official matches.
Since Cache remains in FMPONE’s hands, its addition to Premier Mode and pro tournaments is uncertain. We fully expect it to come to competitive and casual game modes, but if it’s going to appear in official tournaments, some behind-the-scenes business likely needs to be sorted first.
