Introduction

Much like in other games, CS2 maps are constantly rotating to keep the game fresh. The turnaround isn’t as drastic as it is in some other games, but it’s always a good idea to know exactly what you can expect when you’re booting the game. In this article, we’ll go over all current CS2 maps, divided into their respective categories.

Map Categories

Active CS2 maps can be divided into four different categories:

  • Active Duty Map Pool: these maps are used in the pro scene and in Premier mode.
  • Reserve Map Pool: these are maps that aren’t in the Active Duty pool, but can be played in competitive. This pool can have former Active Duty maps, future Active Duty maps, or maps that will never make it to Active Duty. It also has hostage rescue maps.
  • Wingman Maps: These are (smaller) maps, exclusive to the Wingman gamemode. Wingman also has scaled-down versions of larger Active Duty maps, but we don’t consider them as unique maps.
  • Arms Race Maps: These maps are exclusive for the Arms Race gamemode.

There’s also a category containing discontinued maps, but since there’s no way to play those on official servers, we don’t consider it to be part of the map pool.

Active Duty Map Pool

For most people who play CS2, the active duty map pool will be the most important pool. This contains the maps that are currently being used for official tournaments and competitive play.

Ancient

A jungle-themed ruin map with narrow choke points and a wide open mid section, which is crucial to control if you want to win the map. Stone temples and overgrown paths define the fight.

Overpass

Set in Berlin, it mixes tight tunnels with long sightlines on a riverside park and canal that’s overseen by a train overpass. CTs start right on the A bombsite and can very quickly rotate to B, making this map quite unique in the current pool.

Train

An industrial rail yard full of narrow lanes, boxy train cars, and open bomb sites. A classic map that’s been fully reworked for CS2. This map really emphasizes team play.

Dust 2

Probably the most iconic map in all of gaming. It gets copied in pretty much every game that allows you to make your own maps. Dust 2 isn’t as teamplay-oriented as some other maps, so solo players can thrive here.

Inferno

A rural Italian village with tight alleyways and the infamous banana choke point. If your team can’t successfully take or defend this, you’ll get locked out of sites easily.

Mirage

The longest-serving Active Duty map in CS:GO/CS2 history. A fan-favorite map with lots of ways to play. Since it’s so old, even players in the lowest ranks know a couple of lineups here, so if you want to thrive on this map, you’d do well to learn some yourself.

Nuke

Stacked bombsites in a nuclear power plant. This map is quite unique due to how reliant it is on teamwork. If your team doesn’t properly communicate, you’ll lose the match more often than not.

Reserve Map Pool

The reserve map pool is interesting to take a look at. Here, you’ll find maps that the devs are finetuning for the active duty pool, and you’ll also find maps that have (temporarily) been rotated out of the active duty map pool. It also has maps that are made by the community and chosen by Valve.

Not all maps in here are guaranteed to make it to the main map pool, but Valve pretty much always tests new active duty maps here first.

Anubis (Former Active Duty)

One of the newer CS maps that made it to the active duty map pool. It wasn’t played that often in Premier, but featured quite regularly in pro play. We do expect to see this map back at some point in time.

Vertigo (Former Active Duty)

A map that Valve just can’t seem to quite get right. It’s a very divisive map in the community and in the pro scene, so it made sense that it was removed. It has a lot of potential due to its unique layout and background, but it hasn’t quite been perfected yet.

Basalt

Set in an Icelandic village, this map combines extremely long sightlines at the edges with narrow, close-quarters combat near the bombsites.

Edin

Based in Scotland, this map features tons of alleys and small plazas. Its tight corners and ample clutter make it look realistic, but it can be confusing to play.

Grail

This map is set in a very colorful and saturated amusement park, making it break away from the usual realistic and gritty aesthetic.

Jura

Set in castle ruins, this map will no doubt bring a small tear to the eyes of Cobblestone enjoyers. It has long, winding alleys with long sightlines, and some close-quarters sections.

Office

This is basically the Dust 2 of hostage rescue maps. It’s a staple in the world of CS, and even though it has never made it to the active duty map pool (hostage mode doesn’t get played in Premier) it’s a well-loved map.

Italy

A sunlit Italian village with winding alleys. Terrorists can turtle hard here, so CTs need utility to flush out hostages.

Agency

A corporate skyscraper on multiple levels. Outside, it has huge sightlines. Inside, things can get pretty close-quarters.

Wingman Map Pool

Wingman maps are smaller, more compact maps that are made for 2v2 matches. This map pool also features downscaled versions of larger maps (like Overpass) but in this article we’ll only list the unique Wingman maps that you can currently play.

Brewery

Set in a brewery, this map offers tons of connecting passages and alleys. In the center of the map, the bomb can be planted on two levels, adding a degree of creativity.

Dogtown

Set in a colorful amusement park at dusk, this map offers longer sightlines and a stronger focus on rifle fights.

Arms Race Maps

These maps are dedicated to the Arms Race mode. There, players get a weapon upgrade after a couple of kills. You start off with the strongest weapons in the game. The better you play, the worse your weapons get. The first player to progress through all of the weapons and ends the game with a knife kill, wins.

Shoots

In CS:GO, this map was set in a jungle village. In CS2, it has been changed to a ruin map that’s very similar to Ancient. Not everyone liked this redesign, but it can’t be denied that this is a good, symmetrical Arms Race map.

Baggage

Set in an airport luggage area, this square map has lots of verticality. As a cool little easter egg, the conveyor belts can be turned on or off by players. You can do this in the control booth at the bottom of the map.

Pool Day

An absolute classic from way back in the day. Long sightlines don’t exist here, and the glorious chaos that results from that is part of what makes this map so alluring.

Conclusion

CS2 maps rotate all the time, so it can be difficult to see the forest for the trees. Because of that, we’ll give you a handy overview of what modes the currently active maps support.
