- Switch to simple edit if you struggle with editing or you’re a new player
- There is no real benefit for players who are already consistent and good at editing
Along with the brilliant Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 1, Fortnite also announced an almost game-changing feature—simple edit. A unique feature designed to make editing “simpler”. But, along with the excitement of a new feature also came the lingering question of whether you should switch to it or not.
So, we decided to finally answer this question. Going into detail about the difference between normal and simple edit, weighing the pros and cons of simple edit, and giving a clear answer to whether you should switch or not.

What is Simple Edit?
Simple edit is a feature to make editing simpler. Instead of pressing the edit button and manually selecting tiles of the section you want to edit, you can edit with just one tap. All you need to do is look at the section you want to edit and press the edit button and it will automatically edit the piece.
Normal Editing
Select the tile and press the edit button to confirm.
Simple Editing
Just press the edit button once while looking at the section you want to edit. For a window, just look in the center. The icon in the center also shows what the edit will be when you confirm.
How to Turn On Simple Edit
Turning on simple edit is relatively simple:
- Go to Fortnite’s Setting.
- Navigate to the Game Tab (the fourth one with the cog icon).
- Scroll down until you see the Building Section.
- You will see two settings, Simple Edit and Tap to Simple Edit. Set them both to “On”.
Fortnite Simple Edit Pros
The biggest pro of the simple edit is in its name, the simplicity. Being able to edit with just one click is very helpful. During my testing, I found that it was easier to do triple edits on simple edit than on normal edit. It reduces the amount of times you have to press the edit button to edit which makes editing faster.
The second thing is the ability to reset the build with just one tap as well. Normally, you would have to press the edit button, then press the reset button, and then the edit button again to confirm. Meaning, a full three inputs to reset one piece. On the other hand, in simple edit, all you need to do is look at the edited piece and press the button once to reset it.
Sure, resetting edits has never been a problem for PC players because of the mouse wheel reset bind, but controller players still face this issue.
The biggest pro is that you can never miss edits. If you are trapped in a box and the enemy is pressuring you, it can happen that -while trying get out of the box- you mess up the edit. With simple edit, this will not be an issue since you won’t have to select the editing tiles yourself. To put it simply, your editing consistency with the simple edit will go through the roof.
Fortnite Simple Edit Cons
The simplicity of the simple edit is like a double-edged sword. Sure, it makes editing simpler and easier, but it also removes the customization that a lot of higher-skilled players appreciate. There are only a set amount of edits you can do with simple edit.
The best example is the floor piece. With simple edit, you can only do four types of edit, which is opening up one tile of the floor on all sides. On the other, hand you have a lot of options with normal edit, like opening up 2 or 3 pieces of the floor.
The last major con is the removal of the fun factor. While simple edit makes editing easier, it also makes it boring. Although this is down to personal opinion, performing a Mongraal classic or a triple edit on normal edit mode is much more satisfying and rewarding than on simple edit.
If I were to explain it with an example I would say it’s like the difference between driving a manual stick shift car versus an automatic one. Sure, the latter is easier, more comfortable, and practical, but the fun factor is in the first one.
Should You Consider Switching to Simple Edit?
If you have been playing Fortnite for a while and are confident in your editing ability or editing has never been an issue for you, then switching brings no real advantage. Instead, it actually takes away some creativity from you. This is why a lot of pro players will not switch to simple edit.
But, if you are someone who struggles with editing or is just not perfect at it, then there are really strong reasons to switch. Similarly, players new to Fortnite or switching to the build mode might benefit greatly as well. It will save you hours of practicing and will allow you to focus on other important things like aim, game sense, and positioning.
In essence, simple edit was designed to close the skill gap between players who are good at editing and players who aren’t.
Apart from this, the other players that could benefit greatly from using simple edit are controller players. Let’s face it, editing on the controller is much harder than on KBM. In a game where you have to be precise and fast with edits, controller players often struggle. This is why simple edit can make editing easy for you.
But, again if you are already good at editing than there is no reason to switch.
Is Simple Edit Faster Than Normal Edit?
Technically yes, but it also depends on the player. For example, if you take a pro like Peterbot who has exceptional mechanics, the difference in editing speed for him in simple edit and normal edit will be indistinguishable.
But, if you take a casual player who doesn’t have the perfect mechanics then the difference in editing speed for them will be night and day.
After all, simple edit does remove one entire input from the editing process, which is technically faster.
Conclusion
Simply put, simple edit is a tool that Epic Games has provided for casual players to bridge the mechanical skill gap. It aims to make editing easier and simpler while still keeping the mechanical aspect in play. Most of the pros will not switch to simple edit, but you will see a lot of other players switch to this setting, mainly because it makes editing so much easier.
